Two steps to keep your child learning when schools close for quarantine or other disruptions

Is your child home from school after being exposed to someone with COVID-19? Children can lose confidence when their school routines are interrupted, so we want to give families free tools to keep everyone moving forward.

Whether your child is home for 14 days of quarantine or their schooling has been disrupted for another reason, parents can take these two steps to keep their children learning.

Two steps to keep learning:

Step 1: As soon as you learn about your child’s school disruption, proactively contact your child’s teachers to ask what they need to work on during their time at home. We provide a sample email that you can send to teachers at the end of this post.

Step 2: Download our Daily Schedule, and work together with your child to agree on how they will spend their days at home. These schedules are meant to be templates that can be used as is or modified to better suit the needs of your family, classroom, or district.

  • If you don’t have specific guidance from your child’s teacher or school yet, you can use our grade-specific suggestions for Khan Academy content, including math, reading, grammar, and other important subjects. Khan Academy has self-paced, interactive content—practice problems, videos, and articles—for students in every grade and in most major subject areas.
  • Once you have the information from your teacher, you can customize the schedule with the learning content that your teacher provides.
  • Don’t forget to schedule time for connection and play. Children need time for play, exercise, journaling, listening to podcasts, and other enriching activities! Our Daily Schedules have time built in for these important activities
  • Stick with it: We’ve heard from some families that they use alarms to signal when it’s time to move to another activity. You can use your phone or a smart home device to set alarms that go off throughout the weekdays.

Founded as a nonprofit organization more than ten years ago, Khan Academy’s mission is to provide a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. During these challenging times, we’re here to help you ensure students keep learning. Khan Academy is free, non-commercial, and is made possible by philanthropic support from people like you.

Template email to send to your child’s teacher:

Dear [teacher’s name],

We received the news that [your child’s name] has to stay home for [insert amount of time; for example, 14 days due to a positive COVID case]. We wanted to write and ask what our child should focus on academically while they are home.

Are there certain assignments, activities, or worksheets that we need to complete?

What subjects should we focus on as we learn at home?

We appreciate your help.
